World language study requires students to access executive functions and working memory in ways they haven’t had to in other disciplines. For this reason, many talented, capable, high achieving, neurodivergent students struggle to successfully complete world language classes. Supporting executive function and working memory in the world language classroom equips all students with what they need to succeed without compromising content and curriculum. It also promotes ACTFL’s goal of giving all students exposure to world cultures and access to foreign language education. This session will provide the knowledge needed to implement executive functioning supports while also implementing best practices for teaching world languages. The presenter will outline difficulties neurodivergent students face in the world language classroom and provide attendees with a tool kit to modify existing lessons and materials so that they are executive function friendly and accessible to all students.
